Making an informed decision when it comes to Plastic Surgery
Today, plastic surgery is increasingly popular, likely influenced by social media and societal pressure. Requests for plastic surgery procedures are on the rise. According to data released by SICPRE in 2021, nearly 13 million cosmetic surgeries and approximately 17.5 million non-invasive treatments were performed worldwide. The overall increase was 19.3% (+18.5% for surgical procedures and +19.9% for non-invasive treatments). These figures, pertaining to 2021, were announced in January 2023 by the International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery.
However, as Dr. Maurizio Pisapia, head of the Plastic Surgery Department at the “Celio” Military Hospital in Rome and professor at the Tor Vergata University School of Specialization in Plastic Surgery, suggests, it is essential to make an informed decision before undergoing surgery.
Dr. Pisapia, an expert in general and plastic surgery with 30 years of experience, highlights the key factors influencing a patient’s decision to undergo reconstructive or cosmetic plastic surgery. «There are several steps to making an informed choice. The first is to look in the mirror and ask yourself: Does this make sense? What do I need? What is the process for undergoing this procedure? What about my body bothers me?” These fundamental questions should reveal the patient’s motivations: “This is the starting point,” the doctor explains, “and in the vast majority of cases, there is clear dissatisfaction with some aspect of one’s body. Therefore, it is right to have the opportunity to improve it, naturally through the hands and guidance of a specialist who can help them».
Once personal goals are clear, choosing the right professional becomes crucial. Dr. Pisapia advises consulting multiple surgeons, evaluating not only their credentials and memberships in recognized plastic surgery societies but also their empathy and ability to communicate transparently. «An appealing website or a well-curated Instagram profile is not enough,” he warns. “It’s essential to choose a qualified professional and verify their membership in prestigious associations such as the Italian societies of plastic surgery».
With nearly 2 million procedures (both surgical and non-invasive), the United States leads the global rankings for aesthetic procedures. In 2021, Italy recorded 283,668 cosmetic surgeries and 385,116 non-invasive treatments, according to the same SICPRE study. Both numbers increased compared to 2020, a year heavily impacted by COVID-19. In 2021, Italy ranked ninth globally, down from eighth place in 2020.
The importance of the first appointment before a Plastic Surgery procedure
The first consultation with the surgeon is critical. During this stage, Dr. Pisapia explains, it is necessary to delve into the motivations and expectations: «The first 15-20 minutes of a consultation are a vital conversation to understand the reasons behind the patient’s request and to evaluate whether these expectations are realistic».
In some cases, psychological counseling may be helpful, especially to distinguish between patients with rational expectations and those who might never be satisfied with the results. «The surgeon’s role,” he adds, “is also to know when to say no, explaining to the patient that a procedure is unnecessary or will not achieve the desired results».
Currently, many individuals are more inclined to seek plastic surgery abroad, drawn by lower costs. However, Dr. Pisapia emphasizes the significant risks of this decision: «It’s important not to completely demonize this option, but it’s crucial to understand that regulations and certifications in some countries may be less stringent compared to Italy or the European Union».
The doctor notes that while it is possible to find qualified professionals abroad, the lack of therapeutic continuity poses a critical issue. «The direct relationship between doctor and patient is essential, especially in case of complications. Returning to Italy after undergoing surgery abroad makes addressing potential problems much more challenging».
For those who still choose foreign surgeons, he advises thoroughly verifying the credentials of the facility and professionals and ensuring reliable post-operative follow-up is included in the process.
Unrealistic expectations due to Social Media
According to international statistics, the most frequently performed surgical procedure is breast augmentation, followed by eyelid surgery and lip augmentation. For non-invasive treatments, the top procedures are hyaluronic acid injections, Botox, and chemical peels. Dr. Pisapia warns against the risks associated with the influence of social media, where images and testimonials often fuel unrealistic expectations. «Many patients draw inspiration from photos and videos on social media, but it’s crucial to remember that every body is unique, and the goal of surgery should be personal well-being, not comparisons to unattainable ideals».
In a world increasingly dominated by digital communication, the surgeon’s role becomes even more delicate: guiding patients toward informed choices, managing their expectations, and providing all necessary information.
Plastic and cosmetic surgery is a journey that requires reflection, awareness, and the guidance of qualified professionals. The doctor concludes: «Empathy, transparency, and expertise are the key elements to building trust between doctor and patient, ensuring both the safety and success of the procedure».
