LESC: the innovative approach for reducing localised adiposity
Subcutaneous LipoEmulsion, known as LESC, is gaining popularity as it treats localised adiposity in a less invasive manner compared to traditional liposuction. Dr. Kiran Degano, a specialist in reconstructive and aesthetic plastic surgery, provides a detailed overview of this innovative technique.
The LESC process
Doctor Degano explains that LESC is an outpatient treatment aimed at reducing localised adiposity of medium and small sizes. «We work using microcannulas with a diameter of about two millimetres, after local anaesthesia. An ultrasound is used to destroy the barrier of adiposity, causing the adipose tissue to transition from a solid to an emulsified state».
The emulsification of a fat enables aspiration, inducing fewer traumas, making recovery quicker and less invasive. «It generally allows patients to achieve results with less postoperative discomfort for the patient and a faster recovery».
Differences between LESC and traditional liposuction
LESC differs from traditional liposuction because it focuses on emulsified fat, avoiding mechanical damage to the tissue during aspiration. While traditional liposuction requires a mechanical breakdown of adipose tissue with the cannula, in LESC, the cannula only emits ultrasounds to transform the fat from solid to liquid. This makes LESC a less invasive and traumatic treatment: «the treatment is much less invasive and traumatic. It allows for very rapid recovery. Within twenty-four to forty-eight hours, patients return to their work activities», comments Degano.
Suggestions and limitations of LESC
LESC is generally recommended after evaluating the patient’s health condition through blood tests and an electrocardiogram. However, in that case, it is necessary to go to the operating room, and the treatment becomes longer, thus extending the recovery period. This would somewhat negate all the advantages that this type of treatment offers».
Areas of application and popularity
LESC is suitable for both men and women, adapting to differences in adipose distribution. «Men usually come to treat the abdomen and hips. In some cases, we also treat gynecomastia, obviously only the adipose one». As for women, «The most requested area is the love handles. But also the abdomen and hips, secondarily the inner thighs, and in the upper part, the arms».
Thanks to its rapid recovery and promising results, LESC presents itself as a valid alternative to traditional liposuction, offering the advantage of treating specific areas of the body with a faster and less invasive post-operative period.
